A Tisket, A Tasket, A Very Useful Basket

" A tisket,a tasket, a green and yellow basket. I wrote a letter to my love and on the way I dropped it.
I dropped it, I dropped it, and on the way I dropped it. A little boy he picked it up and put it in his pocket"

It was a wonderful surprise! A dear friend sent you a beautiful gift basket to cheer you after your surgery. One week later, the tasty snacks and candies have all been consumed, and you are left with the memories and an empty gift basket. Don't be tempted to dispose of it because you cannot think of other ways to use it!  The real gift IS the container and not the treats inside!  This empty basket is a very useful basket and it's ready to give more service in the months and years ahead with a little imagination.

A gift basket is a general term for the many types of containers and the various materials used to construct them. Gift boxes are usually themed, have beautifully applied graphics, and are perfect for holding mail, keys, recipes, and other small items that might be easily misplaced around the home. Place it in your entry, desktop, kitchen counter, shelf or mantle for a decorative storage accent that is so accessible! Care Package boxes, with built in handles, can hold anything from a boxed lunch to art supplies or become a makeshift animal hospital! Load it with a few simple first aid supplies, hand wipes, non-perishable snack items, juice boxes, water bottles, a coloring book or sketch pad,  colored pencils, or a few small toys and you have created a very useful travel kit to keep in your vehicle for long road trips with small children!

Assorted Cookie Bouquet containers ( mugs, ceramic boxes, mini wicker baskets, melamine blocks or mini flower pots )  earn the designation as " mini gems" for storing those tiny items like earrings, buttons pins, thumb tacks, batteries, etc. that get lost so easily around the home and can be dangerous if swallowed by pets or small children. Give one to a neighbor or friend with a favorite planting from your garden. Use these to store and display anything from  children's art supplies, desk supplies, or mixed paints to spices and potpourri!

Baskets, so versatile with or without handles, can be used in a myriad of ways. Store and  display sewing notions, clothing items to be mended,a guest room amenities basket with trial-sized toiletry items, hand towels and wash cloths, small stuffed animals, rattles and teethers , silk or fresh flowers, fruit or a collecion of cherished items. Be creative and make a centerpiece for your table tonight and flank it with pretty pair of candlesticks! Faux Leather Trays are classy and practical, and can be used to hold snacks, drinks, a tea service, decorative candles, sea shells, books or puzzles for your living or dining room table.

Planters, constructed of durable metal and embossed with designs, can quickly double as coolers for use inside or out at your next party. Just line with a larger, clear plastic bag, fill with ice and add your favorite bottled wine or other drinks. Fill with several small  containers of ice cream and surround with ice for a fabulous ice cream bar! Don't forget the scoop!  Use this decorative and practical container to carry, store and display items all around the home as many ways as you can imagine! It can also become a new home for plants, flowers, magazines or towels in the bathroom.

Insultated Sports Coolers hold drinks and snacks on the course or at the track in style. Refill them with your favorite foods for a delightful homemade meal on the run, traveling care packages or first aid kits with ice packs for emergencies.  The large Basketball Game Day decorative bowl is perfect for holding popcorn, chips, or other party foods. Fill it with fruit and granola bars and display it on a large counter or table for quick snacking!  Use the empty " Gone Fishing" wooden  boat as a decorative wall accent, fill with gummy worms or Swedish fish for a unique fishing themed party, or fill it with paper clips, memo pads and other office supply items to turn your new desk organizer into a conversation piece that will bring a wide smile to any avid fisherman's face!

Custom Embroidered Infant Layette Sets arrive in toy-sized Radio Flyer wagons, wicker handled laundry hampers or beautiful cloth or wicker baskets. The wagon is  perfect for storing stuffed animals, toys and dolls and will be sure to become a treasured nursery plaything. Baskets and laundry hampers are also great for storing baby clothes, blankets, books, toys, stuffed animals and dolls, but can attractively perform  double duty on the changing table for diapering supplies. As the baby grows, and the space needs change, the baskets and hampers can assume new roles on shelving units as more loosely constructed basket drawers.

Let's go back to the children's rhyme above so that I can show you how the rhyme  fits together with baskets and decorating. I have loved this children's rhyming song since I was a young child, and yes, " tasket " rhymes nicely with basket!   This well known  children's rhyming game and song first surfaced in America around 1879 during the Victorian era. Children formed a circle, took turns running around the outside, dropped a handkerchief, and the nearest child picked it up and chased the dropper. If the dropper was caught, he or she was either kissed, joined the circle or revealed their "sweetheart's" name. Follow me ( and hang on tight ) as I attempt to weave all of these elements together!

A tisket or tasket ,( nonsense words used to fill the meter of the rhyme),  likely refer to a " ticket", which was likely made from woven paper with cloth fibers. Paper and cloth are both useful and recyclable .The game is played in a circle. It has no beginning or end, and is renewable as the children " break out and rejoin " the circle as the game progresses.  The circle is the most commonly used shape for basket making , and if  constructed of quality materials, the basket will provide years of continuous service to its owner in a myriad of useful and decorative ways, regardless of whether it is plain or embellished with decoration. This Victorian era game is about young, innocent  love and "courting". Gift baskets are very popular items to send to loved ones and friends of any age around the country to show them that you love and care about them. Love and service to your neighbor is vital to maintaining love, hope and life. La Bella Baskets has a " basket of hope" mission, spreading love and joy to single mothers around the country every month. I hope that you are still with me after that last stretch. I had to " weave" so many elements together in a clever manner!

Two years ago today, I started my " work from home" gift basket business as a consultant with La Bella Baskets and wanted to compose a special blog for the occasion. I am  a veteran mother of four children, now ages 16-22, and have enjoyed creative writing since childhood. Being an Interior Designer for over twenty-five years with a special interest in Custom Window Treatments, I am always looking for creative ways to weave design into as many aspects of my life and environment as possible!   Recently, I started including decorative storage and display tips in each of my gift basket review blogs on my website. The baskets are beautiful indeed and very useful after the snacks and treats have been eaten. I also try to be respectful of resources and try to creatively  re-purpose materials whenever possible.  I have woven three passions together:  creative writing, design, and recycling (or " re- purposing " as it's referred to in the design world ) into this one large blog which I hope will inspire all of my readers to think creatively when they purchase or receive a gift basket in the future! Remember that gift baskets are the gifts that keep giving! I hope that you will enjoy these ideas as much as I have enjoyed sharing them with you.  Here's to creative storage, decorating and re-purposing!

Direct Selling: Twenty Years of Testing The Methods

Direct Selling. I am certainly no stranger to the concept. In its infancy, I began as an Avon Representative in the Summer of 1982, a young woman, fresh out of high school and eager to make new customers in my assigned sales territory, which just happened to be my neighborhood. It was door to door cold calling at first, then visiting in my customer's homes: regularly for most, and occasionally for some, on a two week campaign format. After two years, your customer's needs and preferences become very familiar and friendships form. You become more than just a salesperson or neighbor, you become a trusted friend.

In the Summer of 1984, I moved on to direct sales with a different product and  a different sales environment. With over  half of my Interior Design degree courses finished,  I became an Interior Design Consultant in the Custom Design Studio at the immense Montgomery Ward department store in downtown Baltimore, MD. As a consultant, I worked both in the store studio, greeting interested customers, answering questions and arranging appointments for future in home consultations. Once in their home or office, I was sharing my newly formed knowledge of custom made window treatments, bedspreads, upholstery and carpeting as was applicable to their individual needs. Designing products to solve individual needs while meeting  aesthetics became my new method of direct selling, and personal trust was the bridge to success again.

In early January of 1985, I tried another form of direct selling, in home party sales as a Beauty Consultant for Mary Kay Cosmetics. I had attended an in home party of a close friend, and with my sales experience as an Avon Representative with similar products, I decided to give it a try. In home beauty parties offer a unique direct selling climate: a captive audience that is testing out the products before purchasing them. The key to success here is to know the products so that you can apply them to individual skin care needs, teach proper and successful application techniques, and convey confidence in both your knowledge and the customer's ability to repeat the application techniques satisfactorily on their own.
During this same time period, I began working part time at another Interior Design firm in the Columbia Mall. This was a design store most noted for their wallpaper trade, decorative accessories, custom made floral arrangements and support Interior Design services. As part-time sales personnel, I was limited to helping customers in the store setting, or the full time design staff with their design customers projects. After graduation in June 1985, I set my sights for full time design opportunities.

The years of  Fall 1985 to Fall 1988 were filled with the experiences of working full time in two design firms between Baltimore, MD and Fort Wayne, IN. At both firms, I was the " Girl Friday", and handled everything at each firm from the Interior Designer who visited homes and businesses with Custom Design Products to Office Manager and everything in between!. One firm had a public studio with store hours and the other was a private studio. What remained the same was the vast amount of  design  experience, knowledge and passion for my profession. Trust in your consultant is the key to a successful working relationship, friendships are forged, personal referrals and "word of mouth" advertising becomes the model.earned. I even gave advice to a recently widowed gentleman for tie and suit coordination after his sofa upholstery was complete!

The twenty years since have been filled  with raising four children , managing a household, and being the family of a clergyman. Direct sales and business skills were kept fresh with door to door sales of Boy Scout popcorn and Girl Scout cookies with four children. Almost two years ago, I became a Consultant for La Bella Baskets and began a gift basket business of my own from home. While I leaned on my direct selling experience from the past twenty with offline sales and marketing , it has been the online marketing which has produced the biggest learning curve for me in my entire life and the most satisfying challenge ever! Learning new computer skills, creating interesting social media marketing applications and writing creatively to an online consumer base has intrigued, challenged and sparked a old form of direct selling with a new medium. Still, no matter how different the format, the audience and the technique, the enabler to success remains the same: Trust

Two Months Too Long

Wow! I can't believe how time flies!  Life has been very busy for me in the last two months. Spring always has it's own brand of busy, with  increased household, parish, school and scouting activities. I expanded my cleaning business, started two blogs,  increased my online presence in the social media realm with my gift basket business, and still maintained all of the volunteer efforts at the same level as last year! The thought of this is simply exhausting! I am challenged, fulfilled, and passionate about each aspect, and letting go of one would be difficult. Instead, I will just manage to the best of my ability and let the chips fall as they may, and pray that they don't fall too far!

Life is about balance: God,family, job or career, education, health and fitness, household responsibilities, pets, friends, community involvement, and leisure. Everyone's list varies, but everyone has one to maintain. A slight change in any one aspect  will affect the balance of them all. An ailment in one member of the body affects the other members of the body.  While we require the presence of "stress" to propel   us forward into action, a sustained abundance over time bears negatively on our overall health and happiness. Too much is not a good thing!

At times, it seems that my balance is tipped toward over abundance, but flexibility is my resolve. I am fortunate to be able to operate all of my entrepreneurial pursuits from home base on my own schedule. I transitioned from a full time "stay at home" mother of four children for twenty years to a "work from home" mother ( two teens left at home )  with two part-time businesses in the last two years, two pets, and a healthy dose of volunteer spirit to round it all out!  Two months has passed since my last blog entry here; I guess that my vacation is over!

La Bella Baskets: Simple Program Is Simply Brilliant!

La Bella Baskets? Never heard of them you say? If not, then you will in the near future. La Bella Baskets, a gift basket company based  in Lakeway, Texas, just outside of Houston, has grown exponentially in the last two years. Like many young companies in America, it began with an idea; provide a useful product and reliable customer service, sprinkle in a healthy dose of entrepreneurial spirit and enlist enthusiastic individuals to promote the company. While La Bella Baskets is similar in its beginning foundations, it is the focus and delivery that has set it apart from the others.. It started with a simple plan that is simply brilliant!

The co-owners of La Bella Baskets believe strongly in the entrepreneurial spirit of Americans and wholesome family values.  Simply remove the obstacles to allow individuals the opportunity to own and operate a gift basket and flower business from the comfort of their homes, while caring for the needs of their families. Provide the structure, resources and guiding principles, but let each independent consultant operate their business as they wish. Increase initiative and enthusiasm for leadership with incentives.Provide a support system to build teamwork and an exchange of ideas. Create a mission focus to benefit single mothers with beautiful baskets.  La Bella Baskets provides a simple program that is simply brilliant!

The outcome of this simple program is a national team of consultants that are diverse, creative, passionate,  tenacious, accountable, talented, courteous and supportive of others. Ownership cultivates self esteem and self preservation.  While all consultants are given the same set of tools and training, the end result is uniquely different!  Customer service from independent consultants will be much more personalized too. A business owner always looks out for the best interests of  their established customers and is always seeking to add more!

La Bella Baskets is a truly unique company with a simple program that invests in, believes in, and encourages men and women to invest in themselves and their future, while providing the building blocks and the training for a successful  full time career or part time home business. I have enjoyed the pleasure of being a La Bella Baskets consultant for almost two years now. I enjoy the challenges, the thrills and the complete freedom  of business ownership. It has a truly satisfying experience so far, and I have learned a great deal about myself. I treasure the friendship and support of the company's co-owners and my La Bella colleagues around the USA. Thank You La Bella Baskets for believing in me!

Leigh's" Certified Male Shoppe" : Four Albums of Window Shopping Dedicated To The Guys

I have always been a big fan of window shopping since I was a young child. Whose eyes are not drawn into the windows of a brightly lit, artistically crafted store window display? Successful window displays attract and appeal to our senses and direct our minds to seek more inside the store. What will you find when you enter the store? You would expect to find more items like the ones displayed in the window. After all, your curiosity was intrigued and you desire to seek more of the same.

In that same line of reason, I wanted to display the many gift baskets that I have in my online gift store, so that "passers by" could sneak a peek into my Facebook Store Front window and see what is offered inside. If you like what you see in my Facebook Window, then visit  my online store with over 400 gift basket  and flower selections!  It is my desire to create more photo albums in the future like these. While some might consider  gift baskets  best left to the discretion of women, Leighs " Certified Male Shoppe " was created to showcase all of the gifts  that I thought men might like to receive grouped  around four themes: Sports, Distinctive Gifts, Sweet Tooth and Snacking. Happy window shopping!

Window Shopping Facebook Style!

Do you remember walking past the rows of shops and gazing into the store windows when you were a child? Each store window was decked out in holiday splendor. Slender manequins dressed in the latest  fashionable clothing, dolls, toys,,train sets, stuffed animals, melt in your mouth confections, perfume, and shoes of all kinds. It was mesmerizing and magical; a picnic for the senses. Velvet fabric artfully draped like a carpet about the window, twinkling lights, items strategically placed to draw the eye inward and colors and textures to add just the perfect panache! Memories so vivid, rich and wonderfully captured in our minds and hearts forever!
Being both nostalgic and artistic minded,  I wanted to capture the magic and charm of holiday window dressing and infuse it into a new medium for all to enjoy! My Facebook Store Front page is my  palette to bring lovely gift designs from my online store into computer " windows" all over America and beyond everyday. Enjoy the window shopping! Come inside my online store when you see  something that you would like. I'll always be happy to help you find the perfect gift every time!

When Opportunity Knocks, Answer It!

When the co-owner of La Bella Baskets called my home this morning and personally asked me if I would like to host the National Team Conference Call tonight, I was honored and said, " Yes!"  The other co-owner that usually hosts  the conferences, was sick and had no voice. I have never done this sort of thing before, but I am one who does " step up to the plate" and offers my help when needed! " The show must go on!" is my motto!  It was hard to focus on household duties today.  My mind was pre-occupied with my newest role and doing it the best that I could do.
The call came to start the conference at 8:55pm EST.Ready or not, here it comes! I am a pretty relaxed soul,    third child of four myself and used to a certain level of " controlled chaos", and  being the mother of four children born within six years, I have learned to do many things.,many times without  the time to practice or prepare, but always greeting each with a pleasant demeanor! I did it! I finshed the conference agenda provided me, and the Q & A, and even filled in some " dead air time with a paragraph that I had written this afternoon, just in case. It served as filler and I was glad that I wrote it. I am anxious to hear my recorded call and see how I sound! I had a blast being host tonight! I was a little nervous of course, but who isn't a little nervous with new things?

The Magic of Candles

Candles. those colorful forms sculpted from hot wax with added scents  can instantly transform a room into an inviting place. The aroma of an Apple Pie scented candle delights your nose , a smile to your lips and has your mind fixed on tasting a freshly baked pie! The scent of your favorite gourmet coffee, has your mouth yearning for a cup of brew. Our olfactory sense is our most sensitive and long remembering sense. Scents of food simmering on the stove or baking in the oven can transfer our mind back to childhood days when we helped bake our favorite cookies at holiday time . Remember? My favorite was always the Peanut Butter Kisses! If you simply adore having candles around, you won't want to miss the January Candle Sale in progress in my online store!  I have three different categories of candles with a minimum of six scent collections to choose from. The Bakery  Collection tempts you with Strawberry Shortcake, Lemon Meringue, Apple Pie, Spiced Cookie and more. There's Coffee Scents, Fruit Scents, Citrus Scents, Aromatherapy, Floral, Holiday and Berry. The Duo set allows you to pick one scent  for one set and  another scent for the other set. At fifteen percent off, you can give them away as gifts, or keep some for yourself! Don't forget to use the code to get the savings! It magically makes the price go down!  Visit me online at:http://bit.ly/ow7djR
